Time Out Mission Online Bible Academy

To all T.O.M Friends

*Introducing the new T.O.M Online Bible Academy*

The Lord has great joy when we join together in your local towns as one
body regardless of church or ministry background. To have fellowship and
encourage each other like this is at the heart of TOM and you are actively
promoting and demonstrating the message of TOM when you do this.

TOM in essence is a movement of God and not an organisation or
institution. We do however, as carriers and custodians of the TOM message,
have a great responsibility to ensure that the message spreads, undiluted or
corrupted in anyway. We have therefore developed an organic framework that
facilitates this movement ethos, whilst maintaining some measure of
accountability to ensure that healthy relationships and operations exist
within the T.O.M movement around the world. Part of this framework involves
requesting that the local committees of indigenous leadership elect a
suitable person to oversee the work as the committee wishes.

It is our responsibility at T.O.M Intn’l (UK) to impart the TOM message
and provide guidance and oversight, but it is the role and responsibility of
the local, regional or National Steering committee to ensure the outworking
and application of that message in whatever way the Lord is leading them.
Part of that process is their appointment of someone to represent them, and
we will honour and accept that person as your representative for the town,
region or nation.

We truly value your hard work and commitment to the message and work of
TOM.

*It is our strong desire, and indeed the mandate God has given to
us, to empower you in this important work.*

Consequently, we are delighted to announce that we are launching the
official *T.O.M Online Bible Academy *this month of September
which will include an examination based on the lessons.

All Local and Regional Co-ordinators and National Directors will have the
privilege of completing the 23 lesson course first, to equip and will be
necessary to enable them to continue as TOM serving officers.

The TOM Academy training course will then be made available to any TOM
committee member or representative or registered member (T.O.M. Friend) who
desire to complete it. This is not compulsory for non co-ordinator roles, but
is highly recommended to allow greater understanding of the TOM vision and
mandate.

As you know the full TOM teaching is available on our website (click
“teaching” from the available menu options) and can be accessed now for
study purposes in preparation for the exam questions. The questions will be
released in blocks of four sessions i.e. first exam will be for sessions one
to four and will only be released when the student feels sufficiently
prepared to complete them and requests them. When completed they will be
returned to us, the International Directors for review and marking. The
successful student can then repeat the process with the next four sessions
and so on, until the full current syllabus is finished and a pass certificate
is obtained.

Please contact International Director Bryan Waters on
(bryan@timeoutmission.org [1]) if you have any further
questions.

The International Directors are excited about this new initiative and
fully believe that the launch and development of the TOM Academy is the best
way to propagate the message the Lord has given it. By providing the means to
enable quality teaching and training for those who have a real heart to
partner with TOM, the Academy will provide a very firm foundation for the
work to continue around the world.

God bless you all

Howard Barnes

on behalf of all three International Directors

Bryan Waters (T.O.M Academy Administrator), Mike Pike and myself

PAYING IT FORWARD

You may have seen the Kevin Spacey movie Pay it Forward, which illustrates the biblical principle of the far-reaching effects of random acts of kindness performed with no expectation of return.
Indeed, it is acts of mercy that often pave the way for people to even hear the good news, as the Gray Matrix concept graphically demonstrates.
This 3-minute moving Thai film illustrates the same thing.

THE WORLD WE LIVE IN

Existential angst. Stand-up comedian Louis C. K. was on the late-night show Conan, explaining why he doesn’t want his kids to have smart phones. He may well be right, but the reason I am highlighting this item from the excellent Second Nature blog is because both he and his interviewer (from 1:21 in) admit to the horror of existential loneliness and how ready people are to cover it up with displacement activity. (And the audience laughter indicates a ready understanding of this avoidance strategy.) Jesus-followers either forget this feeling, or, growing up as believing children, may never have experienced it at all. We need to empathize and engage with it.

It is rare to read or hear anyone using this angst avoiding strategy as a starting point to share the good news. Would you agree? Do you know of an effective and appropriate use of this?

RAISED WITH CHRIST

Before Christian Aid began helping Christ Alive Tanzania in 1996, the ministry had no outside financial support. About half of the 240 gospel workers now receive assistance to help them continue their work among more than a dozen people groups. From the capital city of Dar Es Salaam to the borders of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, they are planting churches and ministering to orphans and widows. Open-air meetings draw large crowds and yield a great spiritual harvest of new converts—like this woman who publicly professed her faith in Christ at a baptism service. Motorcycles and bicycles are needed for travel to remote villages to reach more people with the gospel.

Host a New Year’s Eve Party

Host a New Year’s Eve Party

Share this Post:
If you want to love your neighbors like Jesus, it often doesn’t take great acts of kindness or huge sacrifices on your part, but simply being open to seeing what their needs are, and willing to help out where you can. Sam Riviera gives some practical examples of how this has looked in his own life.

Every year we host a New Year’s Eve party to help us get to the neighbors. It is a fun and enjoyable way to get to know your neighbors so that you can show them the love of Jesus. Though I know it is a little early, if you begin planning now, you can get a head start on planning a New Year’s Eve party that will help you get to know your neighbors.
new years eve
Since the evening party needed to be held indoors due to the time of year, we were unable to invite all of our neighbors (our table seats only twenty four), so we focused on our nearest neighbors. When we invited people, most said that they “usually don’t attend New Year’s Eve parties” because they try to stay off the road on New Year’s Eve, then laughed when they realized they all live no more than a block from our house.

Lemon Meringue Pie and Wasabi Peanuts

Last year’s New Years Eve party was literally a last-minute effort thrown together that day and the day before. One of our neighbors was dying. She was very discouraged. We knew she wouldn’t be here for another New Year’s Eve. When she agreed to drop by for a few minutes, we quickly invited other neighbors to join us. But what to cook? We settled on take-and-bake pizzas from Costco, complemented by other prepared foods. Our guests loved it!
This year’s menu was somewhat expanded, but take-and-bake pizza was still the centerpiece. Almost everyone, on their own, brought along pie, cookies, wine, breads, cheeses and so on. The big hit: lemon meringue pie. The big dud: my personal stash of Wasabi peanuts. Although clearly labeled, some people ignored the label (they thought they were getting green Jordan almonds maybe?) and took some anyway. Consequently, all but one person (a true Wasabi fan) happily put their Wasabi peanuts on my plate when they figured out what Wasabi peanuts are.

Eating and Talking

We have no agenda for our neighborhood parties. We set them up and let them happen. Once neighbors get together, they love to eat and talk. Unless the food is bad or there is not enough food, they don’t remember a few weeks later what they ate. However, they do remember who they talked to and what they talked about. We hear people comparing previous places they have lived and worked, what wars they fought in, what’s happening in the neighborhood and various other topics. For the most part, they’re just getting to know each other better.

Moving to Hawaii?

Here are some of the comments people give us in between parties:
”When you have another one of those neighborhood parties, we’d like to be invited.”
“We missed the block party, but plan to come next year.”
“We got to know some of our neighbors better. Even though we’ve lived on the same street for over thirty years, we really didn’t know each other very well.”
“Great party, just a great party!” “Don’t move away! Who’d organize our parties? We love them!”
Most people love getting to know their neighbors. We do! Though we had planned to move to a warmer climate when we retired, we recently decided to stay right where we are. Why? We have lots of really great neighbors!
We care about our neighbors and they care about us and each other. We’re choosing that instead of Hawaii or Florida. If you’re wondering about the spiritual significance of all of this, I will close out this series with a post on that very topic.

MASIH BERTAHAN HINGGA KINI

(Lukas 12:48)

Bagaimana kaum perempuan masa kini ikut menuai kesempatan demi tujuan Bapa mereka? (t/Yudo)

Sam Riviera gives some practical examples of how this has looked in his own life.

In the last post we reported on our neighborhood July 3rd block party, which has been part of our getting to know our neighbors and helping them to get to know each other better. How does a block party and getting to know our neighbors have anything to do with connecting with God?

Loving People

I ran across a great statement in Kathy Escobar’s blog post “Dreamers, lovers, and status-quo rockers”:
I’d say that the most defining part of my faith–the center of what I believe–is the love of people & redemptive community. The way I connect with God is through relationship with people.
Even though Kathy’s statement does not describe our “agenda,” it describes our experience. We love people because we are followers of Jesus, but have discovered that in the loving we are connecting with God!
We love people because we are followers of Jesus, but have discovered that in the loving we are connecting with God!
How does this happen? Perhaps some current real-life examples with some of our neighbors will help explain.

Plumber Needed

plumbers neededOn the 4th of July, the morning after the block party, our phone rang not long after we got up. Our neighbor, a single woman, told us that her kitchen drains had backed up and her plumber wasn’t available on the holiday. She asked if I could look at the problem.
Half an hour later, I had determined that there was a blockage inside the wall. I needed a plumber’s snake and a plumbing fitting to fix the problem. One neighbor loaned me a snake, and another neighbor found the necessary fitting in his box of plumbing supplies. Three neighbors cooperated to provide tools, supplies, and labor to help a fourth neighbor!
Later that afternoon the woman whose drains now worked phoned us once again to thank us and to tell us about her conversation with her mother, an elderly lady who lives alone, about forty minutes from us. Our neighbor had told her mother about the block party, her neighbors and the cooperation of her neighbors in getting her drains unstopped that morning. Her mother told her that she (the mother) would like to have neighbors like that who she could call if she got in trouble (She has concerns about living alone).

Remodeler Extraordinaire

The following day, another neighbor, with whom we had become better acquainted while talking with him about the block party, saw us walking and invited us to see what he had done with his house. I owned one contracting business and managed another and am not easily impressed with remodels, but I was very impressed with his. He has made an extraordinary number of improvements to his home, many one-of-a-kind modifications. Without a doubt he is a borderline genius.
As we walked through his house, he told us his story, his achievements and some of the difficulties he has faced. He told us his dreams, dreams for his future, including business dreams. When we hear someone’s story we see the hand of God, where God has been working in their life and glimpses of His plan for their future.

Real Life with Real People

These stories may not be the dramatic stuff of famous books or sermons, but are the simple, yet beautiful stories of real life with people we know: our neighbors. They are stories of where we see God, in people we know, in our neighbors, in our neighborhood.
We have discovered that we connect with God when we connect with the people who cross our paths in the course of everyday life.
Do you have stories of experiencing connecting with God when you connected and formed relationships with other people? Share any that you might have in the comment section below!

7 Ways Smart Churches and Ministries Using Social Media

What is your church doing to leverage Social Media? Here are just a few things to think about as you move into the age of technological evangelism.

Podcasts - If you don't do anything else here, do this! Podcasts are too easy for people to share with their friends.

Blogging - Here's how Athens Church (A North Point Strategic Partner) is using their blog. Click Here and make sure you scroll to see the pics.

Vlogging - (Video Blogging) If people see that you're a real person they're more likely to connect with you. Click Here to see my latest.

Twitter - 7% of Americans are on Twitter (the real influencers like you and I). This is an easy way for you to add value to people every day. If you do it well people will feel more connected to you. FYI -Tweet stuff that matters.

Facebook
- 42.3% of Americans are on Facebook. 4 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE YOU ARE TRYING TO REACH ARE ON FACEBOOK. Somebody needs to be on this at your church. Click Here to like my Facebook Fan Page. (Keep in mind I have acceptance issues if you decide not to "like" me)

Youtube - My church (North Point Community Church) does this well. Click Here to see what I'm talking about. See how easy that is to share?

Be Human - Our biggest challenge in reaching the "lost" is to stop thinking of them as lost people and start thinking of them as "my neighbor Todd." Using technology to bridge the gap between the people who love Jesus and "Todd" is THE most effective use of social media.

How is your church using social media to reach people?
